Increase Mather: Preaching Christ, Shaping a Colony

Born: June 21, 1639, Dorchester, Massachusetts
Died: August 23, 1723, Boston, Massachusetts

Increase Mather was one of colonial New Englandโ€™s most commanding voicesโ€”an author, preacher, and statesman who shaped the early American church. Son of Richard Mather, he pastored Bostonโ€™s Old North Church for over six decades and served as president of Harvard College.ย

He preached boldly during political turmoil, advocated for the Massachusetts Bay Colony in England, and cautioned against hysteria during the Salem witch trials. Matherโ€™s enduring work on angels, providence, and pastoral theology continues to instruct believers with gravity and gospel clarity.
